Configuring a Cisco ASA Firewall for SSL VPN using ASDM GUI 'Cisco IOS 12.x' - This document explains how to configure an adaptive security device (ASA) firewall with a single-ha1 mode failover pair running ios-xe2-4-DATA1-universalk9.tar file to work as a standalone ssl vpn server. It also covers configuring ASDM gui for administration of ASA and setting up basic policies like static ip pools, aaa+aaa+, nat rules etc.

Step 1: Downloading Cisco IOS-XE Software

Before you can start with the configuration process on your ASA firewall, it is essential to download the correct version of ios-xe software image file from cisco's official website. To do this:

a) Log in to your ASA management interface using either its default username and password (cisco/Cisco_cisco_123456) or your own credentials.

b) Click on 'Device' tab located at top left corner of ASDM GUI window.

c) From the drop-down menu under 'Software License & Activation', select 'Download a new image'.

d) In the next page, choose your ASA model from the first dropdown box (e.g., ASA5510-8NP-K9 for an ASA 5508-X).

Step 2: Copying IOS Image to Flash Drive

After downloading the correct version of ios-xe software file:

a) Unzip or extract it using any decompression tool like WinRAR or WinZip.

b) Insert a USB flash drive into your computer's available USB port. The ASA should automatically detect and mount this device as 'flash0:'

c) Copy all files from the extracted folder (except for the `.info` file if present), including their subfolders, onto your newly mounted flash drive.

Step 3: Rebooting to IOS-XE Mode

To apply these changes:

a) Power cycle or hard reset your ASA device by pressing and holding down its power button until all LEDs turn off. Release the button after about ten seconds for normal bootup process to begin again with default configuration loaded into memory (rom).

b) Once you see 'hostname' prompt appear on console screen indicating successful transition back towards running IOS-XE mode, enter command: `bootflash:`

c) After pressing Enter key twice more times without seeing any output means ASA has successfully booted up using flash drive as boot device instead of its internal CompactFlash card which contains rom image:

Step 4: Configuring ASDM GUI for Administration

Now that you have successfully transitioned your ASA into IOS-XE mode, let's proceed with configuring the ASDM (Adaptive Security Device Manager) GUI interface for administration purposes. To do this:

a) Open a web browser like Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome on another machine connected to same network as ASA.

b) Type in URL: `https://ASA_IP_address/admin`

c) In subsequent dialog boxes, accept default values by clicking 'Yes' and then enter your admin username (default is 'admin') followed by password ('Cisco_cisco_123456').

d) After successful login, you should see the ASDM GUI dashboard with various tabs along top navigation bar:

- Device: Used for general device management tasks such as changing interface descriptions etc.

- Firewalls : This section contains subtabs like 'Identity Firewall', 'Contexts' which allows creation of isolated environments within ASA; also includes settings under 'nat' and 'aaa+sdm-template'.
